The sleeve gastrectomy procedure, also called vertical gastrectomy, greater curvature gastrectomy, paretal gastrectomy, gastric reduction, or longitudinal gastrectomy, is preformed worldwide for the treatment of obesity.
It generates weight loss by restricting the amount of food, and therefore calories, by removing 85% or more of the stomach without bypassing the intestines or causing gastrointestinal malabsorption. This is a purely restrictive operation. It is currently indicated as an alternative to the gastric banding procedure for low weight individuals, and as a safe option for higher weight individuals. Like gastric banding, this procedure is also performed through laparoscopic surgery while under general anesthesia.
